Carlos Ghosen's Vision
by Jim Flynn on Oct 26, 2014
Carlos Ghosen is a visionary. He sees the environmentally friendly all electric Nissan Leaf replacing the old generation gas guzzling transport system. He told Nissan stockholders, that by 2020 the all-electric Nissan Leaf will control a 10% market share of the entire US auto industry.
Carlos had taken Nissan from near bankruptcy in 1999 to a 10% market share of the worldwide auto market. His vision statement was intended to persuade stockholders to invest the entire future of Nissan in the all electric Nissan Leaf.
The US auto industry was not interested in producing an electric vehicle at that time. Automakers felt electric cars would never sell, they would be too expensive. They insisted that the Leaf had to small of a range at 100 miles, and it took too long to charge the battery. Anyway, the price of oil will remain stable; there is no need for an electric vehicle.
Concurrently, Warren Buffett, through a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, paid $235 million for 10% of Build Your Dream (BYD), an electric vehicle manufacturer in Singapore, China.
U.S. Automakers said all electric vehicles would be too expensive for working class owners. Ghosen’s vision mandated, green progress must deliver affordable prices.
So manufacturing of the Leaf began in Tennessee with 10,000 units produced the first year, 2010. 20,000 in 2011, at a plant with a 400,000 unit capacity. By May of 2014 3200 Leafs were sold. October sales are expected to be over 4000 units. Nissan has placed aggressive sales goals on their dealerships for 2015.
BYD of Singapore, of the Berkshire Hathaway investment, said they may introduce fleet electric vehicles in the US.
U.S. Automakers said the range of EVs was too small and it took too long to charge the battery. Chairman Ghosen’s urged stockholders to take advantage of competition for next generation technology.
The updated 2014 model Leaf has a 129 mile range, in the city, with the recharge time of two hours for 70% capacity. When asked, Nissan owners unanimously agreed that they would not want to sacrifice price for longer range, satisfied with the way it is.
Meanwhile, Dr. Chen of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore announced they had developed gel-cell lithium-ion battery that can be recharged to 70% capacity in two minutes. 100% in five minutes, nearly the same time as refueling a vehicle with fossil fuel. With 10,000 recharge cycles it would last five times longer and have more range than the current li-ion batteries.
Ghosen advised stockholders to take advantage of near-term opportunities.
Fuel prices remain stable but this morning ISIL controls 30% of the world oil resources. Grassroot activists claim we have reached peak oil, and point to tar sands extraction as evidence of depleted wells. Add our addiction to oil and we will see soaring gas prices in the near future.
Warren Buffett, owner of 33 Million shares of GM stock, announced recently that Berkshire Hathaway purchased the Van Tyul Group of automobile dealerships, by far the largest of this type of group. Known as Berkshire Hathaway Automotive, stock analysts rumor that it has something to do with failed and ailing GM dealerships. I believe it is another step in gaining a market share for the BYD Electric Vehicles.
Near the end of October, Ford Motor Company, and seven other major auto manufacturers joined with power companies across the US using Cloud Technology to create a communication system using green energy connections for their late entry Electric Vehicles.
The Leaf has been doing an updated version of something similar since day one.
In conclusion I offer a quote from the late Eric Hoffer, author of The True Believer and The Ordeal of Change: “The only way to predict the future is to have the power to shape it.”
BYD can be found on the stock exchange as BYDDY.
